Welcome to Gympie Chamber of Commerce

Roadcraft Open Day 15th of September

Are you in that “I have a novice driver I care deeply for, and it’s scaring the heck out of me” stage? Or maybe, do you have friends and family who are?

It’s ok – we’re here to help!

Roadcraft is the chosen industry partner in a collaborative research project with Griffith University, QUT and The Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q). So how fortunate for our clients that Roadcraft can tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience of some of the most respected people in the road safety arena.

We’re teaming up with our research partners to hold an Open Day at Roadcraft, where the research team will share some of their wisdom with parents and young drivers. So save the date! On Saturday the 15th of September, we’ll be facilitating two separate, but identical programs to groups of novice drivers and their parents or supervisors.

Professor Barry Watson will present an information session for parents and supervisors where he will share some great tips and advice on how best to support young, novice drivers.

The PhD students will facilitate the education session for novice drivers where they will partake in online, computer based interventions including hazard perception awareness and commentary drive techniques.

Additionally, the Roadcraft team will present some pertinent information sessions and track demonstrations.

The statistics around young drivers are frightening and research is needed about how we mitigate this problem. All at Roadcraft have always believed that effective education is the key and are confident we have the right model to achieve the required learning outcomes, specifically motivating a young driver to choose to adjust their attitude to risk acceptance. But of course we need research to support that theory. Continual course evaluation and development helps us to ensure the Roadcraft education model is effective, relevant, current and industry best-practice.

The Open Day will provide an opportunity for novice drivers and their parents to participate in leading edge driver training research, and put them in the draw to win a two-day Roadcraft course or a $200 Coles/Myer gift card. There will be many valuable, possible life-saving, “take-outs”.

The Lead Researcher on the project Dr Lyndel Bates said, “Australian young drivers are 13 per cent of the population but account for nearly a quarter of road deaths. This project is developing a research informed, theory-driven driver education intervention that includes a computer component to improve their driving skills and attitudes. We are assessing the effectiveness of this. By doing this, the project aims to improve access by new drivers to driving practice while they are on a learner licence and reduce deaths and injuries within this high risk group once they start driving by themselves.”

In summary:

  • Who? Pre-Learners, Learners and Provisional drivers and their parents and/or supervisors
  • Admission is free but bookings are essential and places are limited
